Disappointing Start By Najib Razak

After appointing a lacklustre cabinet, Malaysia's new prime minister refused to answer questions from the media.

Malaysia's sixth prime minister, Najib Tun Abdul Razak took office earlier this month, replacing Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. In Najib's first week, he failed key tests that show he can be his own man. He lost important by-elections, failed to address persistent scandals and selected a cabinet of lacklustre appointees that has not evoked confidence. He ran away from the press, declining to address basic questions about his government.

This poor beginning raises serious questions about his leadership and calls into question his ability to deliver on the reforms that are critical for Malaysia's future.

Before Najib took office he managed to win a strong mandate from within his own party's polls last month, as loyalists in his cohort rose to party leadership positions. Najib represents a third generation of leaders from the UMNO party that governs Malaysia. The first generation assumed office in independence, the second after the racial riots of 1969.

Najib's generation came into politics after 1969, and has matured under the shadow of Mahathir Mohamad, known for promoting economic progress while simultaneously closing political space and weakening political institutions. Najib's strong party showing was expected to set the stage for the new premier to introduce reforms and step out of the shadow of his predecessors. Early signs were good, as Najib's speeches highlighted reforms and the day after he took office he released 13 political prisoners held under the draconian Internal Security Act. Malaysians were pleasantly surprised with his first moves.

Skepticism reigned, however. After the five years of promise without delivery under Abdullah Badawi, Malaysians want results, not rhetoric. Many are not willing to give Najib the benefit the doubt. Part of this is his association with Abdullah's government, as deputy prime minister.

Another reason has to do with the heavy baggage of scandal that cloud Najib's leadership; his alleged connections with corruption in defence contract deals and links to a Mongolian model who was murdered by staff assigned to his security detail have damaged his reputation.

Last week, the two officers charged with blowing up the model were convicted. The government's response has been to ban the use of the model's name – Altantuya Shariibuu – further raising speculation about the crime and suspicions about Najib's involvement. There is no evidence that Najib was involved in the murder, but the lack of credibility that Najib faces – which is only enhanced when he refuses to answer questions – has hurt him.

An even darker shadow is Mahathir Mohamad. The former prime minister who governed Malaysia for 22 years systematically undermined Abdullah while he was in office. He has played a major role in mentoring the new generation of leaders, including Najib himself, and his values that have promoted Malay rights over those of other communities, undermined political institutions, deepened corruption and created a climate of insecurity among the elite that runs deep.

Najib is seen to be under the thumb of Mahathir. While this gives the former premier too much credit, the reality is that Mahathirism remains a force that must be addressed and Mahathir himself remains a political player in his agenda setting role.

These factors played out in three recent by-elections when more than 100,000 voters went to the polls. Najib's coalition lost two of the three contests. The contest it did win – Batang Ai in rural Sarawak – was the result of massive allocations of patronage (RM70 million in promises for 8,006 voters) and included allegations of ballot box tampering. Voters in West Malaysia in two traditionally strong seats for Najib's government, gave the Pakatan opposition coalition led by Anwar Ibrahim larger majorities.

These results were the product of greater opposition cooperation and the inability of the governing coalition to reach across races. Non-Malays voted in large majorities for the opposition. They were joined by large numbers of Malays who rejected the use of Mahathir for Najib's campaign and were tired of the endemic corruption in the system. Najib stayed away from the campaigns, showing that he is not ready to face the public directly. He received a sharp rebuke.

Najib had the opportunity to stem the tide of negative perceptions through his cabinet selections. Here too, he disappointed. The majority appointees are recycled old faces and Najib loyalists. While many of them are among the cleaner alternatives and his choices in finance and trade show promise, the inclusion of Mahathir's son, and reliance on his close allies who are seen to not make the grade do not build confidence.

This cabinet follows in the Mahathir mould, one that appears to focus on the economy and exclude the need for political reform. It does not include individuals who appear willing to address the albatross on Malaysia's economic competitiveness, the pro-Malay affirmative action policy, the New Economic Policy, that has become a vehicle for corruption. After announcing his list, Najib refused to answer questions.

Najib is running away from addressing the factors that will hamper his government. He lacks public support. He is trapped by the system he inherited, the shadows of Abdullah's unmet reform promises and Mahathir's hardline approach. He faces a stronger and more cohesive opposition. Najib's style is more measured, but in these challenging times and in the light of his public credibility issues, the tepid responses have disappointed.

With each passing day that the new prime minister fails key tests, his tenure is shortened. Najib cannot continue to avoid the fact that his political survival is based on winning over the Malaysian public and bolder measures that deliver reform are essential.

Pembunuhan Altantuya atas arahan ADC Najib?~malaysiakini

GEMPAR !!!!

Berita Kes Pembunuhan Altantuya .....

By Shannon Teoh (malaysianinsider)

Azilah says Najib's ADC instructed him to help Razak Baginda

SHAH ALAM, Jan 15 - More than two years after the gruesome discovery of what remained of Altantuya Shaariibuu's body in a forest just outside Kuala Lumpur, the High Court here finally began hearing testimony from one of the two police officers charged with the Mongolian's murder in what has been one of the most politically charged trials ever in Malaysia.

Tantalising details emerged about how the two accused policemen got involved in the case on the instruction of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's aide-de-camp Musa Safri.

The High Court also heard testimony regarding how a “Chinese woman,” presumed to be the deceased, and an unidentified and mysterious “Chinese man” were allegedly blackmailing Abdul Razak Baginda, a close associate of the DPM who was originally also charged for abetment in the murder.

These details emerged when Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, one of the two men charged for Altantuya's murder, took the stand this morning. The other accused is Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar.

The other accused is Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar.

Azilah told the High Court that Musa had contacted him on Oct 17 2006.

The two met the next day where Musa asked him if he knew anyone in the Brickfields police station who could help Abdul Razak.

Azilah replied that he knew one Deputy Superintendent Idris Karim who was the CID chief in the district.

Musa told him that Abdul Razak was being blackmailed and instructed him to meet Abdul Razak and introduce him to DSP Idris, according to Azilah's testimony.

After contacting him through a phone number given to him by Musa, Azilah and Abdul Razak met the next day in the latter's office.

During the meeting, Azilah testified, Abdul Razak told him that he was being blackmailed by a Chinese man and a Chinese woman.

Azilah said he was not told why Abdul Razak was being blackmailed and neither was he told the amount being demanded.

But Abdul Razak let Azilah listen to a voice message, allegedly from the “Chinese man.” In the message, the “Chinese man” said in Malay that “kasi pecah you punya muka,” which can be loosely translated as “I will smash your face.”

Azilah also testified that he heard another voice message in which a woman speaks in English, but he could not make out what she was saying.

Abdul Razak also told him that a “Chinese woman,” whom he identified as “Aminah” was “causing disturbances.

Azilah said he advised Abdul Razak to lodge a police report but the latter refused.

Abdul Razak then told him to advise the “Chinese man,” presumable against continuing with the blackmail.

Azilah was also told by Abdul Razak that the latter had hired a private investigator.

Azilah said he was given a piece of paper by Abdul Razak in which was written the address of Hotel Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and the room number 823.

However, Abduk Razak told him to go to room 512 and “advise Aminah.” The two men then concluded their meeting, Azilah said.

Azilah proceeded to call Sirul and the two arranged to meet in Central market, which is a stone's throw from Hotel Malaya.

The two policemen then entered the hotel and went straight to 512. At this point, Azilah said he was confused with the different room numbers, and decided to leave the hotel without doing anything.

After that, he said that he contacted DSP Idris to ask for help in arranging a patrol car to go to Abdul Razak's house.

Idris agreed to help.

The next day, Abdul Razak contacted him to inform him that the “Chinese woman” was in front of his house with his private investigator.

Abdul Razak asked Azilah to go there to “advise” her.

Together with his then girlfriend Lance Corporal Rohaniza Roslan, he drove to Abdul Razak's house.

He had also contacted Sirul who said he would meet him there.

At the scene, Azilah said he saw an Indian man and a Chinese woman standing next to a car. He then contacted Abdul Razak again, and the latter told him to send the woman back to the hotel.

By this time Sirul had also arrived at the scene.

After exchanging brief introductions with the Indian man, Azilah said he walked back to his car.

At this point the Indian man and the “Chinese woman” walked towards the policeman's car. The woman voluntarily got into the vehicle, he testified.

He then drove off in the car with Rohaniza, Sirul and the “Chinese woman,” presumed to be Altantuya.

The trial is continuing this afternoon.

Siapa Disebalik Pembebasan Razak Baginda - malaysiakini

Failed to prove a 'prima facie’ !!! huh…

Then now, who gave the orders to the two accused to do what they are accused of doing???

OCT 31 — It does not matter what the grounds are for the acquittal of political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda.

It does not matter that he is now a free man and should enjoy the benefits of being a free man discharged and acquitted of abetting in the murder of his former lover Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Ultimately, today's decision by the Shah Alam High Court leaves more unanswered questions and will only become fodder for the conspiracy theorists.

The fact that the two policemen, Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Cpl Sirul Azhar Umar, will continue to face the murder charge will almost certainly ensure many Malaysians will be suspicious of the whole affair.

Regardless of whether it is fair or not, Razak's acquittal will only go further to fuel rumours and speculation about the involvement of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

That has become the nature of politics in Malaysia.

Razak is, of course, a close associate of Najib.

When the political analyst was first arrested in 2006, Najib was, of course, quite concerned with what was happening to his friend.

The DPM's subsequent involvement with securing legal counsel for Razak has become the subject of recent allegations that he may have interfered in investigations.

A recording of text messages between Najib and prominent lawyer Datuk Shafee Abdullah was published on blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin's Malaysia Today website in what was a clear attempt to tarnish the DPM's name and link him with improper behaviour.

But that was just the latest in a series of hammer blows sustained to the reputation of Najib since the murder in 2006.

It has not helped Najib's reputation that a private investigator made a statutory declaration that Najib knew the murder victim and then retracted it the next day before disappearing.

Doctored photographs and other wild allegations also made their way to the Internet.

In all fairness, Najib has conducted himself with a certain degree of dignity considering the allegations thrown at him.

But two years of mud-slinging and some of it has stuck in the mind of many Malaysians.

This is the thing — you say something often enough, even if it is not true you will start believing it.

As Razak left the court house today he was surrounded by hordes of press photographers and reporters whom he calmly told to move aside so that he could go home.

After nearly two years the ordeal is finally over for him.

But for his close friend Najib, this will be a bitter-sweet moment.

His friend is acquitted, but the acquittal will almost certainly give rise to more allegations against him.

Keputusan Kes Altantuya : Razak Dibebaskan - malaysiakini

Dah ku sangka....

Ini keputusan Daripada Bakal PM kita yang budiman..kah kah kah...

[DIKEMAS KINI, 10 pagi] KUALA LUMPUR: Mahkamah Tinggi Shah Alam membebaskan Abdul Razak Abdullah Baginda, salah seorang tertuduh dalam kes pembunuhan wanita Mongolia Altantuya Shaariibuu.

BERITA TERDAHULU:

Pekarangan Kompleks Mahkamah Jalan Duta di ibu negara dan Shah Alam, Selangor menjadi tumpuan orang ramai sejak awal pagi ini untuk mengikuti perkembangan kes berprofil tinggi - melibatkan Ketua Pembangkang, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dan kes pembunuhan wanita Mongolia Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Tinjauan mStar Onlinedi kawasan pekarangan Mahkamah Tinggi Shah Alam mendapati orang ramai termasuk saudara-mara tertuduh kes pembunuhan Altantuya sudah mula berkumpul sejak 7.30 pagi.

Begitu juga di kawasan Kompleks Mahkamah Jalan Duta di sini.

Bapa Altantuya turut hadir, kira-kira pukul 8.50 pagi.

Keluarga tunang seorang lagi tertuduh, Cif Inspektor Azilah Hadri tiba pukul 7.15 pagi.
